It’s World Environment Day; the perfect opportunity to share the vision behind our recent brand relaunch and shed some light on why we have chosen to focus on sustainability as a business.
The reason is simple. Our planet is suffering: The food we eat, the air we breathe, the water we drink and the climate that makes our planet habitable all come from nature, but nature is struggling to keep up with our way of life.
The IT sector is partly to blame for global warming, but it is also part of the solution. In these exceptional times, it is vital to take stock of what we as individuals and as businesses are doing to our environment and think of ways to change our behaviour for the better.
Can IT be ethical?
The irony of our name and what we stand for is not lost on us. We at Ethical IT know more than most that IT is generally not that ethical. Many of us have worked for organisations in the private sector and have experienced first-hand the total disregard for sustainability and the desire to make a “quick buck”.
We firmly believe it doesn’t have to be that way. Technological innovations have made it possible for companies to reduce their energy consumption, be more efficient and ultimately reduce their IT carbon footprint.

But being ethical as a business goes beyond what we do for our clients. Our staff have made some environmentally conscious lifestyle decisions too, from reducing monthly travel to car sharing to saying no to red meat and dairy. Just last month, Ethical IT pledged a Mental Health Day for all staff. This was a free day that employees could take off to focus on their own well-being and spend time with friends and family.
Our History
Our journey to where we are today has been a long one. Ethical IT has been in business for over 12 years, during which time it has prided itself on providing high-quality and sustainable ICT solutions to charities, social enterprises and voluntary organisations.
Our extensive experience within the social change sector in both the UK and Europe meant that we appreciated the financial and technical limits within which organisations often work. This shaped the way Ethical IT operated and resulted in an offering that was bespoke and created specifically for each and every client – there was no one solution that fitted all.
In mid-2018, the company took the decision to take Ethical IT into a new era and focus on sustainable IT solutions that would help businesses reduce their IT carbon footprint. Our offering suddenly became attractive to businesses outside of the social change sector as more and more organisations realised that sustainability was an essential part of successful business planning.
Our core mission is to support the longevity of the planet, our people, our communities and of course the business. The three pillars of sustainability (otherwise known as the triple bottom line) are at the root of every decision we now make:
- Environmental: Reducing our carbon footprint where possible, both for clients and within our own business.
- Economic: Charging fairly and developing long-term relationships with our clients.
- Social: Promoting a healthy work/life balance, including flexible working and embracing the “1% for the planet” ethos.
We believe our bold commitment to helping the environment is groundbreaking, but we want to share our experience and knowledge in the hope that others will follow.
